Intensive Outpatient Program for OCD and Anxiety

What is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Houston Center for Valued Living offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders, such as Specific Phobia, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

IOP provides a compassionate and structured therapeutic environment, 3-5 days per week for 3 hours per session. The program involves working one-on-one with a therapist who specializes in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD. Sessions can be conducted either in person or virtually.

What is it for?

IOP can benefit people in various situations, such as those transitioning from residential or hospitalized treatment, people who are on leave from school or work, or individuals who need more support than a weekly appointment with an outpatient therapist. Our IOP is currently best structured for adults and adolescents struggling with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and/or anxiety. However, depending on availability the program can be modified for children.

How do I know if IOP is appropriate for me or my child?

This is a great reason to give us a call so that we may speak with you and learn more about your specific situation. Our free 20 minute phone consultation can assist us in getting a better understanding of your needs. Often, our regular outpatient program (traditional therapy) can be modified to more frequent or extended (90min-2 hr) sessions. In our brief phone consultation we will ask you more about your diagnosis, past treatment, and current needs. We can make a general recommendation on whether IOP or more frequent outpatient may be the best fit for you. However, an official recommendation will be made after your initial diagnostic evaluation (your first appointment and intake).

What can I expect?

Prior to meeting with your therapist for the first time, prospective IOP candidates are asked to complete an initial phone interview. Potential clients are asked to provide the treatment team with all current and past treatment records. This helps us assess the best level of care needed and that HCFVL is an appropriate fit.

Once you are approved to begin with HCFVL, your therapist will complete a thorough assessment of your current symptoms, along with psycho-educational components specifically targeted to help you better understand the aspects of OCD or anxiety disorder.

Next, you and your therapist will work together as a team to identify treatment targets, including educational components, developing a hierarchy, and learning about exposures.

Treatment for OCD involves Exposure Response Prevention, more commonly referred to as ERP. The Inhibitory Learning model of OCD emphasizes the importance of ERP being conducted in many different environments. At HCFVL’s IOP we work with clients to conduct exposures in your house, in public places, or in our office, depending on the situations that have been specifically identified on your treatment plan. Exposures will occur with your individual therapist and you may also work one-on-one with a behavioral tech who has been specifically trained in exposure therapy.

Your therapist is likely to combine other therapeutic modalities as part of your individualized treatment plan to address other issues that may come up. Other treatment modalities that may be added to IOP programs include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), CBT-I, CPT or other techniques beneficial for your care. Family involvement is often recommended to limit family accommodation and to ensure that treatment gains are transferred to the home environment.

How often do I attend?

Our intensive IOP program consists of 3 hours per day of one on one treatment for 5 days per week. Our less intense IOP offers 3 hours visits, 3 days per week.  As you make progress in your symptoms, from the IOP program to traditional outpatient treatment at HCFVL. This may start as one hour three times per week and decrease as necessary.

What is the cost of the IOP?

Intensive IOP (3 hours per day) is $650 per day.

Travel Fees

For OCD and anxiety work, treatment plans can incorporate exposures in a client’s home or in a public space. We offer this concierge service to our clients to help maximize their treatment gains. As part of this service, we do charge a travel fee.  To bill for this service, clients are charged for the amount of time that their clinician travels to and from the office (4203 Montrose Blvd) to the agreed upon meeting site. Charges vary depending on the duration of the travel, and are billed in 15-minute increments at your clinicians regular hourly rate. If you have any questions about in-home or site visits, feel free to reach out to us at info@hcfvl.com OR if you are a current client your therapist can provide you with additional information.

Do you accept insurance?

HCFVL is not in network with any insurance providers.

What makes the IOP at HCFVL different from other IOP programs?

Most IOP programs offer group treatment. At HCFVL, we offer completely individualized IOP with one on one attention. Instead of following a more generic program, your IOP plan is tailored specifically for your needs.  We can complete IOP exposures at your home, a public place, or the office. We help you get the most out of your IOP experience.

What happens after treatment?

Your therapist will evaluate your progress throughout your IOP journey and together you will determine when your therapeutic goals have been met. A relapse prevention plan will be formulated for you, which is likely going to involve continuing to meet with your therapist on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. You will have the option to attend a weekly support group for adults with OCD during your time in IOP as well as after you have graduated the program.
