FACTS ABOUT OCD

  • In the U.S., 1 in 40 individuals has OCD.
  • OCD causes obsessions that are persistent and uncontrollable thoughts, impulses, or images that are intrusive, unwanted and disturbing.
  • Individuals with OCD perform certain mental or physical compulsions or rituals to relieve the distress caused by the obsessions.
  • Effective Treatments exist to help individuals manage their OCD symptoms.

You are not your OCD and you are not alone. 

    These groups are free and for anyone seeking connection or support from others that have OCD. 

    There is NO COST TO PARTICIPATE.

     About the Texas OCD Group:

    Our OCD support group welcomes adults in Texas experiencing symptoms of OCD. Whether you’re just starting or already on your therapy path, this is the place to find understanding and camaraderie.

    FORMAT AND SCHEDULE:

    We now have  two virtual OCD support groups. One is facilitated by a licensed mental health professional, and the other is led by a volunteer who is not a therapist or clinician.

    WEDNESDAY GROUP

    When: 2nd & 4th Wednesdays @ 12:00 PM (Noon) 

    Facilitator: Christen Sistrunk, MA, LPC-S (Licensed Mental Health Professional)

    Where: Zoom (online) 

    About Christen: Christen Sistrunk, MA, LPC-S, a seasoned OCD specialist with over 15 years of experience with OCD.  This group offers a safe, compassionate space to connect with others who truly understand. Christen brings her expertise from outpatient and intensive settings to guide meaningful discussions, reduce isolation, and support recovery.

    THURSDAY GROUP

    When: 1st & 3rd Thursdays @ 6:00 PM

    Facilitator: Chloe Mouton (OCD Advocate, Volunteer, not a licensed mental health professional)

    Where: Zoom (online) 

    About Chloe: Chloe has been living with OCD since the age of 13, and like most with OCD, has suffered through many types. She joined the OCD support group in May 2020 and has found strength through people that sharing similar experiences. “It is my pleasure to lead a group that has given me support and connection for 5 years. My hope is to give back the same compassion, encouragement, and kindness I have received from the group.

    MEETING STRUCTURE:

    The meeting begins with a brief time for members to log on, connect, and set up. As a group, we may participate in a mindfulness exercise or utilize a shared video to help ease into the session and let go of daily stressors. Attendees are encouraged and not required to introduce themselves and share a bit about themselves. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions and raise topics of interest with the group. If anyone feels hesitant, they are welcome to email ocdsupport@hcfvl.com beforehand with their topics, ideas or questions. 

     

    FOR PARTICIPANTS

    • Meetings are approximately 45-50 minutes long. 
    • Both groups are volunteer-led, peer-based and intended solely for mutual support and connection.
    • It is not a substitute for therapy, diagnosis, or professional mental health treatment.
    • These are open support groups, not therapy groups.
    • The facilitators are not able to offer clinical advice or crisis support.
    • In order to attend either group you must be a resident of Texas and at least 18-years-old
    • If you would like to receive the Zoom link for the meeting, a registration form must be completed. 
    • Cameras should be on during meetings in order as part of maintaining confidentiality . 

    Encouraging Participation:

    Every member’s input is valued, and active participation is highly encouraged. Towards the end of each meeting, we may focus on setting SMART goals. These goals can be unrelated to OCD and may revolve around any area of personal importance. Some examples of SMART goals from past participants include drinking 3 bottles of water daily, walking 3 times a week, or practicing mindfulness at least once a day.
