Counseling at Houston Center for Valued Living
We want to welcome to you to a quiet and peaceful spot for counseling. If this is your first time seeking counseling, you may not know what to expect. We’d like you to be informed on what to expect on your initial visit as well as the types of psychotherapy offered in our practices. We are available by phone or e-mail to address any questions or concerns that you might have.
Your Initial Visit
When you arrive for your first appointment you will walk in the door directly into our waiting area. There is no receptionist to greet you so please have a seat on one of the couches and help yourself to some water. Please refrain from knocking on any of the doors as counseling sessions are likely in progress. Your counselor will come out to welcome you at your appointment time. If you need to take a phone call please do so quietly or step outside into the hallway so as not to disrupt ongoing sessions.
Your first counseling session will be more of an “intake” session than a regular therapy session. This will be a time for your therapist to gain a better understanding of your motivations for seeking counseling and what you would like to accomplish in your work together. Your therapist may also be asking you a lot more questions during this session than she would during a standard counseling session in order to gather more information about any previous treatment history you may have, symptoms you may be experiencing, and any other information relevant to your situation. At your follow-up session your therapist will have discuss a general treatment plan with you and provide recommendations regarding next steps.
